The speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has pleaded with Nigerian parents to continue to exude high moral standards and complement the good ideals taught children in schools.
 He gave this advice as primary and secondary schools in the state and country commence a new academic session.Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly, congratulated Muslims at Eid-el-Kabir Speaking through his special adviser on political and legislative matters, Hon Mufutau Egberongbe, Obasa said lack of morals and love remains the bane of the Nigerian growth and development. He said irrespective of the current challenges facing the society, parents must do well to instill discipline and integrity in children from home since “charity begins at home”
.According to him, petty crimes and even worse ones like corruption, kidnappings and armed robberies are direct results of children’s upbringing and the level of monitoring by parents, guardians and the society. To him, some families have been taken over by the zeal to make money at the expense of good upbringing of the children. “In some cases, parents leave home very early in the morning and come back very late at night leaving the children to the whims and caprices of careless neighbours who are equally running around to make ends meet. “Though it is not bad for parents to go in search of money, they should strike a balance between proper upbringing of their children and the need to make money.
“The schools and the homes should complement each other in the character moulding of the children.
“Parents should desist from encouraging their wards to register at special centres for examinations because it is part of the foundation of fraudulent activities for children growing up,” he said. Continuing, the speaker said the home is a small unit of the state and the society and so, “if we get it right in the homefront, the society will be better for it.”
He also urged traditional rulers to continue to be role models and show exemplary leadership for their subjects to follow. “Chieftaincy titles should be bequeathed on deserving members of the society based on merit and not financial status,” he added. The speaker promised that the House of Assembly would continue to sponsor and come out with laws that would prove Lagos an egalitarian society based on morality in children as well as protecting their rights. He also promised to work with the executive arm for a social network that would take care of the weak and vulnerable so that they could achieve their full potentials.
